The Cyber Kyoto Laboratory, the sole registry supported by Kyoto Prefecture, has debuted the geographical name top-level domain ".kyoto" in cyberspace. The Urasenke based in Kyoto began using ".kyoto" on June 1, 2015 as the first user.
The Cyber Kyoto Laboratory has been preparing for the launch of ".kyoto" by inviting companies and organizations in Kyoto Prefecture to join the Founders Program, a priority registration program. Founders can reserve and acquire up to 20 domain names in advance. Among the many companies and organizations that applied and inquired, "urasenke.kyoto" of the Urasenke Tea House was the first domain name to be registered.
The Founders Program ends on November 30 of this year.
