Cyber Kyoto Laboratory will start selling the top-level geographical name domain ".kyoto" to the general public as a priority registration from January 4th, a digital “land rush” so to speak. The ".kyoto" domain name will be available for sale only to residents of Kyoto Prefecture.
This digital land rush allows the general public to purchase a “.kyoto” domain at a premium price. From February 10, sales will be at regular price and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Cyber Kyoto Laboratory is the only registry for ".kyoto" with the support of Kyoto Prefecture. “.kyoto" was launched in cyberspace in June of this year, and is already being used by Founding Members who participated in the Founders Program and by those who have registered their trademarks with "Sunrise". The ".kyoto" sales program is being conducted in accordance with the regulations of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), a non-profit organization in the United States that manages domains used on the Internet.
