The Cyber Kyoto Laboratory (CKL) of The Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics (KCGI) hosted an information security seminar for the general public on November 22 at the Kyoto Ekimae Campus of Kyoto Computer Gakuin (KCG) in the 6th floor hall. The lecturer was Mr. Yoshiyasu Nishibe, Director of Security Management Office, Information Security Department, NTT Communications. In his lecture titled "Is Your Router Safe?”, after introducing trends in the amount of damage caused by cyber-attacks over the past 10 years and trends in cyber-attacks, Mr. Nishibe explained in detail about the methods used to infect computers with viruses (ransomware) by sending false e-mails under familiar names like NTT Communications and even people we know. As a countermeasure that anyone can follow, Mr. Nishibe advised not to open the e-mail immediately but to wait for a few hours while having the security software check for viruses using data on the Internet. Along with KCG and KCGI students, many members of the general public participated in the seminar, indicating a high level of interest in Internet security.
